Sarla Aviation Begins Ground Testing of its SYL-X1 eVTOL Demonstrator in Bengaluru, India

22 Dec 2025

On December 22, 2025, Sarla Aviation announced the start of ground testing of its SYL-X1 electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) demonstrator at its test facility in Bengaluru, India, marking a significant milestone in the development of electric air taxis in the country.

The SYL-X1 has a wingspan of 7.5 meters and is the largest privately owned, medium-scale eVTOL demonstrator currently under development in India. The program was completed in approximately nine months of development and with a significantly lower investment compared to similar international programs, reflecting an accelerated approach to execution and systems integration.

With the start of these tests, the program enters its main validation phase, moving from digital simulations and laboratory testing to physical, aircraft-scale trials. The demonstrator is designed to validate structural behavior, electric propulsion integration, and safety architecture, serving as a direct bridge to Sarla Aviation’s future full-scale aircraft, planned with a wingspan of 15 meters.

The project was conceived from the outset with a certification-oriented approach, differentiating itself from experimental prototypes or remotely piloted aircraft. This approach positions the program as a technical foundation for the industrial development of advanced air mobility in India.

During the same development period, Sarla Aviation expanded its organizational structure from two founders to nearly 70 engineers and delivered a static, full-scale aircraft for its national exhibition at Bharat Mobility. The company has secured a total of $13 million in funding to date, intended to support its technological and operational roadmap.

Built entirely in India to global aerospace standards, the SYL-X1 reflects a strategy focused on scalability, operational resilience, and reduced complexity, combining electric propulsion with an integrated systems architecture. This advancement places India among a select group of countries actively developing next-generation eVTOL systems at an industrial scale, at a pivotal moment for the consolidation of the country’s advanced air mobility ecosystem.
