Hyundai Motor Group and Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the development of future Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) solutions and next-generation electric aircraft.

The agreement outlines cooperation between the two companies in areas related to electric propulsion systems for aviation, fuselage development, aircraft manufacturing, and future commercial operations within the AAM sector.

As part of the collaboration, Supernal, Hyundai Motor Group’s advanced air mobility division, will work with KAI on the joint development of eVTOL aircraft and AAM platforms. Hyundai Motor Group stated that it will leverage its expertise in electrification and electric propulsion systems, while KAI will contribute capabilities in aeronautical engineering and the development of fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters.

The companies noted that the cooperation will also cover areas related to supply chains, aircraft certification, manufacturing, and access to global markets.

KAI, renowned for its military aerospace programs and systems in South Korea, is looking to expand its involvement in the civil air mobility and next-generation aircraft sector. Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor Group continues to expand its air mobility initiatives through Supernal and the development of electric propulsion technologies for aviation.

The announcement comes as multiple automotive and aerospace manufacturers continue to increase investments and strategic partnerships within the global Advanced Air Mobility market, a sector seeking to develop electric aircraft for urban, regional, and future logistics applications.

The companies did not announce specific certification timelines or official entry-into-service dates for future aircraft resulting from this collaboration.
