Willis Sustainable Fuels and Green Finance Institute Launch Accelerator to Boost SAF Infrastructure in the UK
29 Dec 2025
Willis Sustainable Fuels UK Limited (WSF) and the Green Finance Institute (GFI) announced the launch of a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Project Accelerator, aiming to bring WSF’s SAF project at Wilton International, Teesside (UK) to Final Investment Decision (FID) and create a replicable financing model for new energy transition projects in the UK.
The accelerator is being launched at a key time for the UK market. From 2025, the UK’s SAF mandate requires the progressive integration of SAF into aviation fuel supply, reaching 10% by 2030 and 22% by 2040, generating a long-term demand signal for domestic production.
The Teesside SAF project is one of the most advanced in the country within the second generation of SAF, using proven technology to convert waste into sustainable aviation fuel. The plant aims for a capacity of 14,000 tons per year, strengthening energy security, reducing dependence on imported fuels, and creating jobs in northeast England. The development has received £7.6 million from the UK Advanced Fuels Fund in two rounds of public funding.
The accelerator will address the sector’s main bankability challenges, including technological risks, raw material supply, and revenue certainty. With a track record of £77 billion in committed capital mobilized, the GFI will support leading projects to achieve FID by 2026, facilitating risk mitigation tools and attracting private investment.
