Zaragoza Marks European Milestone with High-Capacity eVTOL Emergency Demonstration Flight
2 Dec 2025
Zaragoza has positioned itself as a pioneering city in Europe after hosting the first large-scale demonstration flight in an urban environment for emergency operations using automated aircraft. The exercise was part of the international U-SAVE project, developed to validate an aerial system capable of transporting essential supplies quickly and efficiently during critical incidents in congested areas.
The demonstration used the EHang EH216 electric unmanned aircraft, a 6-meter-long eVTOL with Vertical Take-Off and Landing capabilities and a payload of up to 220 kg, suitable for transporting medical supplies, medicines, and vital equipment. The flight took place in the Expo Zone of Zaragoza, within the framework of the strategic agreement signed in 2021 between EHang and the Zaragoza City Council.
The U-SAVE project is driven by an international consortium led by ALIA, AERA, EHang, ANRA Technologies, Skycorps Technologies, and the Estonian Aviation Academy. The demonstration marks the culmination of a year of technical validations carried out in Lleida-Alguaire (Spain) and Tartu (Estonia). The system integrates a cloud-based platform for unmanned airspace management, developed by ANRA Technologies, the first EASA-certified provider of unmanned airspace services (USSP).
Funded with €499,700 by EIT Urban Mobility, the project also has the support of the Zaragoza City Council, Mobility City, Ibercaja, AraHealth, healthcare institutions, and logistics providers. Local authorities emphasized that this advancement consolidates Zaragoza as an urban laboratory for air mobility technologies and emergency response solutions.
