IATA’s latest Global Feedstock Assessment highlighted that sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) will be responsible for around 65% of the emissions reductions aviation must achieve by 2050, requiring approximately 500 million tons of SAF globally. In this context, Europe stands out for its readiness and initial capacity to produce SAF, thanks to robust agricultural and forestry sectors, advanced waste management systems, and well-established collection networks.

Strict land-use regulations and limitations on the use of food crops are driving Europe to prioritize waste-based feedstocks, such as used oils, animal fats, and agricultural and forestry residues. However, the availability of waste oils is limited, so more than 85% of the potential will come from agricultural and forestry residues by 2050. Furthermore, e-SAF is projected to contribute around 50% of the region’s production potential by that year.

Despite the ReFuelEU mandate, fragmented regulations continue to hinder market development, impeding progress toward critical investment decisions for technologies like e-SAF. The report indicates that additional policies are needed to harmonize the market and accelerate the expansion of SAF supply in Europe.
