Vertical Aerospace Welcomes UK CAA's Readiness for Commercial eVTOL Operations in 2028
14 Nov 2025
Vertical Aerospace welcomed the recent consultation published by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), which establishes the regulatory framework for commencing commercial eVTOL aircraft operations starting in 2028. The document defines key requirements related to pilot licensing, flight operations, vertigo station infrastructure, and airworthiness, further reaffirming the SC-VTOL standard as the basis for certification, equivalent to the safety levels applied to commercial aviation. This alignment between the CAA and EASA consolidates a globally exportable certification pathway and provides predictability for manufacturers, operators, and investors. Vertical emphasized that this regulatory clarity directly supports its planned market entry timeline, also set for 2028.
The company stated that ongoing collaboration with the regulator is essential for the safe development of its VX4 aircraft. This week, Vertical’s Engineering Director participated in the “CAA on Air” podcast, discussing how cooperation between the authority and industry is accelerating the certification process. Vertical also confirmed receiving its Permit to Fly from the CAA and the start of Phase 4 – Transition of its flight test program, which constitutes the final stage of the VX4 prototype’s development.
