Lighthouse Green Fuels Relocates Sustainable Fuel Plant to New Teesside Site
12 Nov 2025
Teesside, UK — November 2025. Global engineering and development company Alfanar Group has confirmed the relocation of its Lighthouse Green Fuels (LGF) project to a new site in Seal Sands, just 500 meters from its original location in Billingham. The move reinforces the company’s commitment to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production and the industrial development of the Tees Valley region.
The new site offers more space, direct access to rail and maritime infrastructure, and the potential to expand processing and storage capacity in the future. This relocation is part of an ambitious £2 billion project that will transform 1.5 million tonnes of sustainable biomass — including forestry, agricultural, and sawmill waste — into more than 180 million liters of second-generation SAF per year.
The plant, expected to be operational in 2030, will reduce carbon emissions equivalent to 4,500 transatlantic flights between London and New York, representing approximately 11% of the UK’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) mandate for 2030.
During the Airlines 2025 conference in London, Noaman Al Adhami, Director of Alfanar UK, unveiled LGF’s new corporate identity as LGF Projects Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Alfanar Group. In his presentation, he emphasized that the new site will enable greater operational efficiency, integration with carbon capture and storage (CCS) networks, and sustained long-term growth.
“Moving to our new facility means we are now even better positioned to become a global leader in sustainable aviation fuel production. Our project was already the most advanced dedicated SAF project in the UK and the largest of its kind worldwide.”
This relocation will boost operational and supply chain efficiency, and means we will be better positioned to increase production capacity in the future once the first phase of the project is up and running.”
The new site is located on the former INEOS Nitriles site, within the Seal Sands industrial area, renowned for its logistical connectivity and proximity to clean energy projects.
For his part, the Mayor of Tees Valley, Ben Houchen, highlighted the project’s economic and employment impact:
“Teesside is at the forefront of the industries of the future, and Alfanar’s £2 billion investment to build the world’s largest sustainable aviation fuel plant of its kind is a clear sign of that leadership.”
The Lighthouse Green Fuels project is thus established as one of the largest and most innovative in the world in the SAF sector, marking a decisive step towards the decarbonization of aviation and sustainable economic development in the north of England.
