Tokyo Selects Japan Airlines-Led Consortium with Archer's Midnight eVTOL for Air Mobility Program

5 Nov 2025

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has selected the consortium led by Japan Airlines (JAL), which incorporates Archer Aviation’s Midnight aircraft, to participate in the first phase of the “eVTOL Implementation Project.” This initiative aims to develop the infrastructure and operational ecosystem necessary for the introduction of electric air taxis in the Japanese capital.

During this first phase, Archer will collaborate with Japan Airlines, Sumitomo Corporation, and their joint venture Soracle to analyze the market and establish the operational foundations of the system, including planned demonstration flights over Tokyo Bay and waterways. This development marks a key step toward the start of commercial operations in the coming years.

The selection of the consortium strengthens the strategic alliance between Archer, JAL, and Sumitomo Corporation, and complements Archer’s recent agreements in the Asia-Pacific region, including the announcement of a potential order for up to 100 Midnight aircraft from Korean Air. With this, Archer continues to solidify its position as one of the leading companies in the transition to sustainable urban air mobility.
