Skyways Makes Historic Drone Cargo Deliveries to Offshore Wind Farm
17-oct-2025
Skyways, the developer of long-range autonomous cargo aircraft, has successfully completed Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) cargo deliveries to the RWE-operated Arkona offshore wind farm off the coast of Germany, in collaboration with Skyports Drone Services.
During three weeks of operations, the Skyways V2 drone made automated flights of 80 kilometers (50 miles) from RWE’s offshore base to the farm’s turbines, carrying payloads of up to 10 kilograms (22 pounds) and enduring winds of up to 55 km/h (29.7 knots). Each delivery took just 26 minutes, compared to the two hours required by traditional vessels.
The V2’s dual-hybrid system—which combines electric motors for vertical takeoff and a heavy-fuel engine for cruise—gives it an operational range of nearly 800 kilometers (500 miles), while its next-generation V3 will exceed 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles).
The project demonstrates the potential of cargo drones to optimize logistics in remote environments, reducing time, costs, and emissions, and marking a breakthrough in autonomous offshore operations.
