LanzaJet and the UK Department for Transport Support Project Speedbird in Teesside with $13 Million
3-Oct-2025
Chicago, USA, September 18, 2025 – LanzaJet, Inc., a next-generation fuel technology company and producer of sustainable fuels, has received over $13 million (£10 million) from the UK Department for Transport’s Advanced Fuels Fund (AFF) to accelerate the development of Project Speedbird, a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) biorefinery in Teesside, UK, developed primarily for British Airways, a LanzaJet investor and customer.
The funding will advance the project to the Early Engineering Design (FEED) phase, considered a key milestone for one of the first commercial ethanol-to-SAF production facilities in the UK. Among the projects selected in the AFF round, Speedbird received the largest funding support, reflecting the maturity of the initiative and the country’s priority on industrial SAF deployment.
The project will utilize LanzaJet’s patented Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) technology, along with Technip Energies’ Hummingbird® technology. The latter is already being used in a commercial demonstration phase at LanzaJet’s Freedom Pines Fuels facility in Georgia, USA.
Once operational, the plant will produce more than 30 million gallons (approximately 90 kilotons) of SAF per year, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil jet fuel.
The project also meets the UK Government’s SAF mandate, which requires 10% of jet fuel to be sourced sustainably by 2030. It will also have a regional economic impact by creating hundreds of jobs, strengthening Teesside’s local economy, and consolidating the region as a clean energy hub.
With this support, LanzaJet and the British Government are strengthening the expansion of sustainable fuels and reinforcing the UK’s role in the transition to net-zero aviation emissions.
