Amazon explains how its Prime Air drones make intelligent landing decisions in unexpected conditions

2-Oct-2025

Amazon Prime Air delivery drones are equipped with advanced systems that allow them to make safe, contingent landings when conditions change unexpectedly. This measure ensures the protection of people, animals, and property in situations such as bad weather, signal interruptions, or technical failures.

The drones fly between 35 and 120 meters above sea level, following precise routes between delivery centers and customers. In exceptional cases, they follow a structured FAA-approved procedure to descend in a controlled manner. During this process, onboard sensors scan the terrain in real time to avoid people, pets, and obstacles, even adapting to unexpected changes in the environment.

Prime Air combines autonomy and human intervention: while the drones make navigation and landing decisions independently, a rapid response team handles their recovery, ensuring regulatory compliance and respect for the community.
