SATE project receives new funding through the Innovate UK Future Flight competition

30-Sep-2025

The Sustainable Aviation Test Environment (SATE), an initiative dedicated to testing and developing sustainable aviation technologies, has received new funding through the Innovate UK Future Flight competition, aiming to accelerate the transition from trials and demonstrations to commercial development.

The Highlands and Islands region has become a testbed for innovations such as cargo drones and electric aircraft, which seek to overcome historical challenges of connectivity and costs in remote areas. With this new support, SATE will develop a regional sustainable aviation strategy that outlines a roadmap for the adoption of new technologies, contributing to essential services, net-zero emissions goals, and local economic growth.

Future benefits include improvements in healthcare logistics, such as the rapid delivery of cancer drugs, and in high-value sectors such as aquaculture and seafood, where reducing delays can make a difference in quality and competitiveness. Rapid air mobility will also address critical infrastructure needs, including the delivery of essential parts for wind farms and other renewable energy assets.
