SABA Launches Platform to Decarbonize Flights for COP30 Attendees in Brazil
23-Sep-2025
The Sustainable Aviation Buyers Alliance (SABA) unveiled a new platform designed to enable COP30 attendees to calculate and mitigate emissions from their air travel to and from Belém, Brazil, where the UN climate summit will be held in November 2025.
The tool, called the SAF COP30 platform, allows attendees to estimate the CO₂ emissions of their flights, both on commercial aircraft and private jets, and to purchase Sustainable Aviation Fuel Certificates (SAFc) that finance the production of high-integrity SAF. This fuel meets strict sustainability criteria established by SABA and is supplied by SkyNRG, a global supplier with more than a decade of experience developing SAF supply chains.
The platform works in three steps:
- Emissions calculation using the Google Travel Impact Model (for commercial flights) or the Eurocontrol Small Emitters tool (for private flights).
- Purchase of SAFc certificates equivalent to the trip’s emissions, previously verified by SABA.
- Receipt of a retirement certificate in the SAFc Registry, ensuring that the transaction meets traceability and chain of custody standards.
The initiative seeks to generate a “demand signal” to expand SAF production, drive investment in clean fuel projects, and demonstrate that market-based tools can accelerate aviation decarbonization. Since its launch in 2021, SABA has channeled approximately $200 million in investment into SAF, supporting more than 50 million gallons of sustainable fuel.
This is SABA’s third major initiative in 2025, along with SAFc Connect (a platform connecting buyers and suppliers) and a call for tenders for next-generation SAF, aimed at facilitating investments in new production facilities.
