IATA Highlights the Role of Biomass as a Key Resource for SAF Production through 2050
22-Sep-2025
Geneva, Switzerland – The International Air Transport Association (IATA), in collaboration with Worley Consulting, announced that biomass will remain the primary resource for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production through 2050. The soon-to-be-released report notes that global biomass availability is considerable, although only a fraction of this resource can be used for SAF.
Currently, crop-based feedstocks and waste oils represent the main sources used in commercial biofuel production. To achieve the 500 million tons of SAF needed to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, accelerating the deployment of SAF technology, optimizing feedstock logistics, and strengthening infrastructure will be essential.
The study also highlights the strategic role of e-SAF and the importance of cross-sector collaboration along with supportive policies that eliminate bottlenecks and facilitate the development, certification, and deployment of new raw materials and technologies.
