Joby Completes Historic U.S. Defense Exercise with Autonomous Flight Technology
2025-September-03
Santa Cruz, CA – September 3, 2025. Joby Aviation, Inc. (NYSE: JOBY) announced the successful demonstration of its Superpilot™ autonomous flight technology during the Pacific Air Forces (PACAF)-led Resolute Force Pacific (REFORPAC) exercise. The company completed more than 7,000 miles of autonomous operations and 40 flight hours, solidifying its position in dual-system integration for defense and commercial markets.
The exercise took place over the Pacific Ocean and Hawaii, with operations controlled from ground stations, primarily at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam, more than 3,000 miles away. Although a safety pilot was onboard, the autonomous system handled critical missions involving light cargo, inter-island transport, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) profiles.
The validation of Superpilot™ responds to the U.S. Department of Defense’s $9.4 billion request in the fiscal year 2026 budget to advance autonomous and hybrid aircraft. This achievement positions Joby as a contender in future military programs and accelerates the integration of autonomous capabilities into its commercial electric air taxi platform.
The system, integrated into a Cessna Caravan 208 aircraft, demonstrated versatility operating in different airspace classes and under visual and instrument rules. Missions included rapid cargo deliveries, hub-and-spoke logistics, and a successful crossing of the Pacific.
This advancement reaffirms the more than decade-long collaboration between Joby and the Department of Defense, marking a decisive step toward the deployment of autonomous technologies that strengthen military readiness and airlift of the future.
