Gevo Obtains Key Patent for Ethanol-to-Olefin Conversion to Accelerate SAF Production

20 Jan 2026

ENGLEWOOD, Colorado | January, 2026 — Gevo, Inc. (NASDAQ: GEVO), a leading renewable fuels and chemicals company, announced it has been granted a new U.S. patent that strengthens its ethanol-to-olefin (ETO) conversion technology, a strategic advancement for renewable aviation fuel (SAF) production.

U.S. Patent No. 12,486,207 B2, granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), expands protection to multiple catalyst combinations and explicitly covers the use of the ETO process for fuel production. This technology enables the transformation of ethanol into light olefins, which can then be converted into transportation fuels via proven, industrial-scale Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) routes.

Gevo is developing this technology in partnership with LG Chem for renewable chemical applications and in collaboration with Axens and IFP Energies nouvelles (IFPEN) for fuel applications. In addition to its use in SAF (Selective Fuel Oil), the olefins produced can be used in the manufacture of renewable chemicals such as biopropylene, expanding the process’s commercial opportunities.

According to the company, the next-generation ETO (Electrical Oil Transformation) technology could reduce capital and operating costs by up to 35% compared to current technologies, strengthening SAF’s competitiveness and positioning Gevo as a key cost player within the ATJ (Advanced Fuel Juice) segment in the coming years.

Gevo plans to initially implement this technology in North America, boosting economic development and job creation in rural communities, while Axens will support global expansion through licensing, equipment supply, and engineering services.

With this patent, Gevo continues to strengthen its intellectual property portfolio and its sustainable fuels strategy, aligned with carbon emission reduction, energy security, and economic growth based on renewable energy solutions.
