Haffner Energy and IGNIS P2X Launch AeroVerde, Spain’s First Renewable-Leading Bio/e-SAF Project

8 Jan 2026

Haffner Energy, a pioneering company in advanced biofuels, and IGNIS P2X, a developer of energy conversion projects, announced the launch of AeroVerde, their first joint bio/e-SAF project in Spain. In this initial phase, both companies are evaluating and defining the optimal location for the first site, prioritizing access to local residual biomass and proximity to consumption points.

The project combines Haffner Energy’s patented technology, capable of converting residual biomass without conflict of use into hydrogen-rich syngas, with IGNIS P2X’s expertise in renewable hydrogen and Power-to-X technologies. From this syngas, AeroVerde will be able to produce bio/e-SAF using routes such as Alcohol-to-Jet and Fischer-Tropsch. Furthermore, surplus biogenic CO₂ can be integrated with renewable hydrogen (RFNBO) for the production of e-SAF, reinforcing the project’s circular economy approach.

The initiative comes amidst intense regulatory pressure in Europe. Under the ReFuelEU Aviation regulation, airlines must achieve a mandatory 6% SAF blend by 2030. However, recent data indicates that in 2024, SAF represented only 0.6% of aviation fuel supplied in the European Union, with a high dependence on HEFA biofuels imported from Asia—a situation that has been questioned by the aviation industry due to its real impact on emissions.

AeroVerde seeks to address this challenge through local, diversified, and scalable SAF production, reducing dependence on imported raw materials and contributing to a more robust decarbonization of the European aviation sector.

IGNIS, one of Spain’s largest independent energy managers, manages over 9 GW of energy assets and has a portfolio of more than 30 GW of renewable projects globally. With the launch of IGNIS P2X in 2024, the group reinforced its commitment to green hydrogen, ammonia, and sustainable fuels, positioning AeroVerde as a strategic step within that vision.
