Joby Aviation Completes First Piloted eVTOL Air Taxi Flight Between Two U.S. Public Airports

August 15 2025

Joby Aviation (NYSE: JOBY), a company specializing in the development of all-electric air taxis for commercial passenger service, achieved an important milestone by successfully completing its first flight between two public airports in the United States: Marina del Rey (OAR) and Monterey (MRY), California.

The 10-nautical-mile flight, approximately 12 minutes long, included a vertical takeoff, transition to wing-supported flight, integration into MRY’s controlled airspace, and a vertical landing. During arrival, the aircraft maintained a five-minute holding pattern to sequence with another commercial aircraft, strictly adhering to air traffic control protocols.

This achievement marks the first time an electric piloted vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) air taxi connects two public airports in the country, demonstrating the degree of operational maturity, safety, and integration into the national airspace. The operation also demonstrated Joby’s ability to perform mobile flight tests with full ground support away from its main base.

The company, which has accumulated more than 40,000 flight test miles and is advancing through the FAA certification process, plans to begin commercial service in cities such as Los Angeles and New York once testing with FAA pilots is complete.
