The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has published a detailed report on Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) Technologies, highlighting their essential role in decarbonizing the aviation sector to achieve net-zero CO₂ emissions by 2050.

April 11 2025

Key points from the report:

Necessary complement: CDR technologies are critical to offsetting residual emissions that cannot be eliminated through internal solutions such as Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs).

Technology classification: CDRs are divided into conventional (such as reforestation and soil carbon storage) and novel (such as biochar, BECCS, and direct air capture with geological storage).

Economic and technological considerations: Nature-based solutions offer lower costs and greater technological maturity, but carry risks related to the durability of CO₂ storage. Novel technologies require long-term investment and further development to achieve commercial viability.

Need for Investment: The importance of investing in research and development to scale these technologies and establish robust measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) frameworks is emphasized.
