U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean P. Duffy officially unveiled a new proposed rule that marks a milestone in the integration of drones into the nation’s airspace. Titled “Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS),” the regulation seeks to eliminate individual exemption requirements, facilitating operations without direct line of sight between the operator and the drone.
This proposal, supported by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, promises to accelerate the commercial adoption of drones in key sectors such as agriculture, energy, logistics, film, healthcare, and public safety.
Previously, operators were required to apply for permits on a case-by-case basis to conduct BVLOS flights, a slow and restrictive process. The new regulation will standardize these procedures, allowing for broader and safer deployment of unmanned technologies.
Secretary Duffy stated:
“From drones delivering medicines to unmanned aircraft inspecting crops, this technology will radically change how we interact with the world. Our new rules will reform outdated regulations that slowed innovators and improve aviation safety. Thanks to President Trump, the United States, not China, will lead this technology.”
FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford emphasized that standardizing BVLOS flights is “key to realizing the social and economic benefits of drones.” Meanwhile, Michael Kratsios, Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, noted that the rule offers a “predictable and scalable” path for the United States to maintain its global leadership in drone innovation.
The proposal also includes new standards for safe separation between BVLOS drones and manned aircraft, as well as between drones themselves, with an emphasis on safety and efficient management of unmanned air traffic.
