UK Regulator Publishes New Safety Findings for Future eVTOL Integration

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), in collaboration with WMG at the University of Warwick, has published an 18-month study identifying more than 50 priority areas for regulatory development of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

The research, funded by the Department for Transport, applied a systems thinking approach to assess the safety of future eVTOL operations, considering interactions between aircraft, software, hardware, and human factors. The analysis included high-density air traffic scenarios, such as the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, and was developed with input from key stakeholders such as Bristol and NATS.

Critical areas identified include:

Airspace integration with early warning and detection systems for performance deviations.

Vertiport standards with advanced sensors to manage power and landing conditions.

Automation and simulation oversight, with mandatory protocols required to prevent trajectory conflicts.

The results will be integrated into the Future of Flight program and the Airspace Modernization Strategy, with the goal of enabling innovation in advanced air mobility while maintaining the highest safety standards.
