The European Union launches a new Action Plan to strengthen drone security and protect critical infrastructure
11 Feb 2026
The European Union has presented a new Action Plan on drone security, aiming to strengthen the protection of public spaces and critical infrastructure against potential misuse of this technology.
As the drone ecosystem continues to evolve rapidly in both civilian and commercial applications, the EU seeks to ensure that security frameworks keep pace. The plan promotes strategic integration between civilian innovation and defense needs, thereby reinforcing European technological sovereignty.
Key measures announced include:
A €400 million investment in drone technologies and anti-drone systems.
The creation of an Anti-Drone Center of Excellence, dedicated to testing, validating, and certifying new defense systems.
The use of 5G networks to improve the accurate, real-time detection of unauthorized drones.
A boost to AI-based control systems and the development of new rapid response equipment to increase operational capacity and security.
The plan reflects a comprehensive approach that combines technological innovation, operational resilience, and cooperation between the civilian and military sectors, in a context where the safe management of low-altitude airspace is becoming increasingly strategic for Europe.
