Sasol and Topsoe advance e-SAF development with new demonstration plant in Germany

16-oct-2025

Sasol and Topsoe have signed a cooperation agreement with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and Griesemann Gruppe (as EPC contractor) to build and operate DLR’s e-SAF production demonstration plant at the Leuna Chemical Complex, Germany.

With a €130 million investment funded by the German Federal Ministry of Transport, the plant will be the world’s largest research and demonstration facility for e-fuel production, with an estimated annual capacity of 2,500 tonnes starting in the fourth quarter of 2027.

The e-fuels produced will be composed primarily of kerosene, generated from biogenic CO₂, and green hydrogen. The project is part of DLR’s Power-to-Liquid Fuels (TPP) e-Fuels Technology Platform, designed to bridge the gap between SAF research and industrial production.

Topsoe and Sasol are contributing key technologies—eREACT™, LTFT™, and G2L™—for converting renewable feedstocks into sustainable liquid fuels, while Griesemann Gruppe is leading the project’s engineering, procurement, and construction.

Representatives from the organizations agreed that this collaboration marks a decisive step toward the large-scale production of sustainable aviation fuels, contributing to the industry’s overall decarbonization goals.
