LanzaJet Becomes the World’s First Company to Produce Aviation Fuel from Ethanol at a Commercial Plant

17 Nov 2025

LanzaJet announced a historic milestone for the aviation industry by commencing operations and production of sustainable aviation fuel at its LanzaJet Freedom Pines Fuels commercial plant, located in Soperton, Georgia, USA. The company confirmed that it has successfully produced aviation fuel using ethanol as a feedstock for the first time at a commercial-scale facility, setting a global precedent for non-petroleum-based renewable solutions compatible with existing infrastructure and aircraft.

This advancement marks the culmination of 15 years of research, investment, and technological development, and positions the company as a leader in the next generation of sustainable aviation fuels. With the HEFA process nearing its raw material limits, LanzaJet’s Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) technology opens a new chapter for the international expansion of sustainable aviation fuels.

LanzaJet explained that its ATJ technology allows it to transform ethanol—including ethanol produced from waste or recycled carbon—into a fuel certified for blending with Jet A-1. The company invested over $300 million in the Freedom Pines Fuels plant, which generated more than 300 jobs during construction and creates over 65 jobs in its ongoing operation. The facility integrates several pioneering technologies and will serve as a model for future commercial plants in markets such as the United States, Australia, Japan, India, the United Kingdom, the European Union, the Middle East, and Kazakhstan.
