Kintetsu World Express and Shell Aviation Sign New Agreement for SAF Use

August 18 2025

Kintetsu World Express, Inc. (KWE), headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, announced the signing of a new agreement with Shell Aviation to promote the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

Both companies participated in the Smart Freight Centre’s pilot program on market-based measurement mechanisms in 2023. Based on that experience, they initiated discussions that resulted in the implementation of a solution that will allow logistics chain players—including freight forwarders and shippers—to access the environmental benefits of SAF in a reliable and transparent manner.

Under this agreement, KWE will adopt Shell Aviation’s Avelia digital platform. This tool offers traceability through blockchain, avoids double counting, and allows companies to access the emission reduction benefits even when SAF is not physically available at their locations.

Tatsuya Narasaki, CEO of KWE, emphasized that reducing CO₂ emissions and promoting renewable energy are key pillars of sustainability for the company. He also noted that KWE’s short- and long-term emissions reduction goals have already been approved by the SBTi initiative, and that the collaboration with Shell Aviation reinforces this global commitment.

For her part, Doris Tan, Head of Shell Aviation in Asia Pacific and the Middle East, emphasized that Avelia represents a scalable and credible path to accelerate the adoption of SAF and achieve greenhouse gas emission reductions in cargo aviation, not only in Asia but also globally.
