Joby Aviation partners with Sharks Sports & Entertainment to explore vertiports near SAP Center

9 March 2026

Joby Aviation has become the newest partner of Sharks Sports & Entertainment and will also serve as a named partner in the Reimagination Studio as part of the ongoing transformation of the SAP Center.

As part of the partnership, both organizations will work together to explore the development of vertiports around the arena in San Jose, aiming to integrate electric air taxi services within the city’s entertainment district.

The initiative is linked to a multi-year renovation of the SAP Center, designed to redefine the full visitor experience—from how people arrive at the venue to how they interact inside it. The redevelopment will introduce distinct atmospheres across different levels of the arena for sports events, concerts, and entertainment shows.

According to Jonathan Becher, president of Sharks Sports & Entertainment, the partnership allows the organization to rethink not only the in-venue experience but also how visitors travel to and from the arena.

Joby’s aircraft are designed for vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) and are powered by six electric motors, enabling quieter and cleaner operations. The company plans to operate an aerial ridesharing service, combining the convenience of traditional ride-hailing with the speed of flight.

Stephan Baral, head of corporate development at Joby Aviation, noted that integrating electric air taxis into the entertainment district could reduce a typical 60-minute trip to around 10 minutes for fans attending Sharks games, concerts, or family events.

The partnership highlights how urban air mobility solutions could integrate into real-world urban infrastructure and entertainment hubs in the future.
