Jet Zero Highlights Northern Australia's Potential to Lead SAF Production
July 25 2025
Adam Douglas, Industrial Manager at Jet Zero, recently participated in the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) Queensland Country Hour program, where he spoke with Charlie McKillop about the strategic opportunity to position Northern Australia as a national leader in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production.
At the Developing Northern Australia Conference, Adam presented Project Ulysses, a SAF plant based on Alcohol-to-Jet technology that Jet Zero plans to develop in Townsville. This project not only seeks to decarbonize aviation but also to generate jobs, strengthen Queensland’s agricultural sector, and ensure energy security in the region.
During the interview, key topics were discussed, including:
🔹 The choice of Townsville due to its proximity to abundant biomass and logistics infrastructure.
🔹 The relevance of Alcohol-to-Jet technology versus HEFA, especially given the feedstock mix available in Australia.
🔹 Challenges to SAF adoption, including production gaps and previous failed attempts.
🔹 Jet Zero’s role as a catalyst in demonstrating the commercial viability of SAF in Australia.
Douglas also highlighted that a plant like Ulysses requires a significantly larger biomass supply scale than most facilities can manage, underscoring the need to align business acumen, economies of scale, and energy policies to ensure the project’s success.
