Jet Zero, one of Australia’s leading developers of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), celebrated the Australian Government’s announcement of a $1.1 billion commitment to developing low-carbon liquid fuels. The company is leading three projects in Queensland: Project Ulysses in Townsville (Alcohol-to-Jet SAF), Project Mandala in North Queensland (HEFA SAF), and Project Silvo Plus, which is exploring the cultivation of pongamia and agave as innovative sustainable feedstocks.

Jet Zero CEO Ed Mason hailed the investment as a turning point for SAF development in Australia, emphasizing that this government support is critical to advancing Project Ulysses, the company’s most advanced project.

Low-carbon liquid fuels, known as “drop-in fuels,” are recognized as one of the most effective and viable avenues for decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors such as aviation. With this investment, Australia seeks to accelerate project development, strengthen its energy security, and increase the use of domestic agricultural raw materials, at a time when the country imports 91% of its aviation fuel.

The announcement complements previous commitments, including $280 million allocated to the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to support this industry, as well as the $181 million fund recently announced by the Queensland Government (Sovereign Industry Development Fund – SIDF).

Located in Townsville, the Ulysses Project is advancing engineering and initial works activities for $75 million and plans to begin construction in 2026. Once operational, the project will produce 113 million liters of SAF and renewable diesel annually by 2028, representing one of the largest investments in the region in more than 25 years.

Mason also recognized the work of his team and strategic allies who have promoted policies supporting SAF over the past three years, highlighting the growing support from advocacy groups and agricultural associations such as the National Farmers Federation, Canegrowers, and Grains Australia.

Ahead of COP30, Jet Zero reiterated its support for the creation of a national SAF mandate, aligning Australia with other G20 countries and ensuring stable demand for producers, with the goal of “getting regions on the runway” with sustainable aviation fuel.
