Gevo Reaches Historic Milestone by Issuing 500,000 Carbon Removal Credits from its North Dakota Plant
21 Jan 2026
Gevo, Inc. (NASDAQ: GEVO), a leading renewable fuels and chemicals company and a leader in advanced carbon management, announced that its North Dakota plant has surpassed the issuance of 500,000 high-quality carbon dioxide removal credits, known as Carbon Removal Certificates (CORCs), since the start of its carbon capture and storage (CCS) operations in June 2022.
Gevo’s North Dakota site is considered the world’s largest producer of engineered carbon removal credits and the only CCS ethanol project issuing certificates under the Puro.earth standard, guaranteeing a certified lifetime of up to 1,000 years. This achievement positions the company as a global leader in scalable and verifiable carbon removal solutions.
The issuance of these credits is based on rigorous environmental integrity standards, with strict controls to prevent double counting and ensure complete traceability of every ton of CO₂ removed. This approach allows the credits issued by Gevo to be recognized in both regulated low-carbon fuel markets and voluntary carbon markets.
This milestone is particularly significant in a context where the global Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) market has exceeded $11 billion, but where only 2.8% of committed credits have actually been delivered, according to industry data. In this scenario, Gevo’s operation stands out for its industrial scale, operational reliability, and consistent delivery of high-integrity credits.
Additionally, Gevo’s North Dakota plant’s carbon capture and storage initiatives recently received an “A” rating from BeZero Carbon Ltd., one of the world’s most recognized carbon rating agencies, reinforcing the project’s technical and environmental credibility.
With this advancement, Gevo solidifies its position as a key player in the development of engineered carbon removal solutions, demonstrating that large-scale carbon capture and storage is not only technically feasible but also operationally reliable and ready to support global climate goals.
