Eurowings and Greenlyte Sign Memorandum of Understanding for SAF Production in Düsseldorf

2025-September-08

Eurowings, a Lufthansa Group airline, and Essen-based startup Greenlyte have signed a memorandum of understanding establishing a strategic partnership for the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at Düsseldorf Airport.

The project involves the construction of a real-world laboratory for the production of kerosene “from air to tank” using power-to-liquid (PtL) technology. Upon completion, it is expected to become one of the world’s largest facilities dedicated to SAF using direct air capture.

Under the agreement, Eurowings will be the exclusive purchaser of the entire volume produced during the first three years, consolidating its position as a strategic partner in the project. The airline has its largest European base at Düsseldorf Airport, reinforcing the impact of this cooperation.

The development responds to the current availability and cost challenges of PtL-SAF, which is still up to ten times more expensive than fossil fuel kerosene. Increasing production and reducing prices will be key to meeting aviation’s sustainability goals.
