European Union launches the Pioneers Coalition to accelerate the adoption of eSAF

5 Dec 2025

The European Union announced the launch of the eSAF Pioneers Coalition, an initiative aimed at boosting the production and adoption of sustainable synthetic aviation fuels. The presentation took place in Brussels, on the sidelines of the Transport Council meeting, with the participation of Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain.

The Coalition emerges as a central pillar of the Sustainable Transport Investment Plan, highlighting the strategic role of eSAF in the decarbonization of the aviation sector. In line with the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation, the European Union projects that synthetic fuels will represent 1.2% of the fuel used at European airports by 2030 and 35% by 2050.

Currently, the EU has more than 40 eSAF projects awaiting investment decisions, underscoring the need to accelerate funding to consolidate its industrial leadership in this emerging sector.

The Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, stated that the Coalition will strengthen European aviation’s efforts to reduce emissions. He also highlighted that participating Member States aim to mobilize at least €500 million for large-scale projects, supporting the rapid deployment of eSAF across the continent.

The initiative also envisions the development of bilateral auctions for eSAF, with the first planned for 2026. These auctions will offer financial security to producers and competitive contracts for buyers.

The Coalition begins its work immediately and remains open to the participation of other interested Member States.
