Elroy Air and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Successfully Complete Chaparral UAV Tests

3 Nov 2025

Elroy Air marked a significant milestone in air logistics by completing a week of testing with the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) focused on the Chaparral unmanned aerial vehicle, a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) system designed for inter-island logistics missions.

During the exercises, conducted in September, the Chaparral successfully completed 22 key tests, including 25-mile point-to-point flights, transporting a 300-pound payload, maneuvering in high winds, and operational maintenance exercises. The results confirmed the system’s ability to redefine inter-island supply transport, offering autonomy, flexibility, and efficiency in challenging environments.

“Hosting the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) during this intensive week of testing was a significant milestone for Elroy Air. Demonstrating the Chaparral’s performance in 22 capabilities showcases the system’s robustness and maturity, and underscores the value it will bring to logistics missions in demanding environments,” said Andrew Clare, CEO of Elroy Air.
