Ecopetrol and LATAM Airlines Colombia advance toward the decarbonization of aviation by promoting the production and use of Jet A1 with renewable energy
April 3 2025
Ecopetrol and LATAM Airlines Colombia have taken a significant step in reducing emissions from the aviation sector through the production and use of co-processed Jet A1. This sustainable fuel is the result of a collaboration between the two companies to accelerate the transition to cleaner aviation in the country.
Co-processed Jet A1 is an aviation fuel that incorporates renewable inputs in its production, reducing the carbon footprint without requiring modifications to airport infrastructure or aircraft engines. Its implementation in Colombia marks a milestone in the advancement of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) in the region.
This development is possible thanks to refining at Ecopetrol’s plant in Cartagena, where successful tests have been conducted for the production of this fuel. LATAM Airlines Colombia, for its part, has integrated this fuel into its operations, reinforcing its commitment to reducing CO2 emissions and meeting global sustainability goals in aviation.
The alliance between Ecopetrol and LATAM Airlines is part of a broader strategy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and promote cleaner energy solutions. With this initiative, Colombia joins the global trend of incorporating sustainable fuels into the airline sector, aligning itself with international commitments to emissions reduction and energy transition.
As the development of co-processed Jet A1 advances, its adoption is expected to expand in the region, incentivizing investment in SAF production technologies and strengthening the infrastructure necessary for its implementation. This joint effort reflects the importance of collaboration between the energy and aviation industries to achieve a more sustainable future.
