SkyDrive earns Japan's first eVTOL Approved Design Certification

SkyDrive Inc. became the first electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) developer in Japan to receive “Approved Design Organization” (ADO) certification from the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB), the company announced on April 20, 2026. Skydrive has plans to launch commercial flying car services by 2028.

The certification, issued on April 15, was granted under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and formally recognizes that SkyDrive possesses quality control and safety management systems for aircraft design and post-design inspection.

The ADO designation is equivalent to the Design Organisation Approval issued by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency and the Organization Designation Authorization granted by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, giving SkyDrive’s engineering credentials international recognition at a moment when the global advanced air mobility industry moves toward commercialization

In practical terms, it authorizes the company to conduct a portion of the safety inspections that would otherwise be carried out directly by government officials, which the company says will help streamline its development and certification pipeline.

As of April 2026, SkyDrive became one of only six companies in Japan to hold the certification, a group that otherwise consists of established aerospace manufacturers.

Where the certification process stands

The ADO designation is one component of a broader regulatory journey. SkyDrive’s primary objective is a Type Certificate for its SD-05 aircraft, the government validation required before an aircraft design can operate commercially. That process is structured across six steps.

In March 2026, the company reached agreement with JCAB on its General Certification Plan, a document outlining all activities required to demonstrate the aircraft’s compliance with legal requirements and the cooperative steps between the regulator and SkyDrive.

SkyDrive has submitted all remaining system-specific certification plans to JCAB, where they are currently under review. Once agreement is reached on those plans, the program is expected to advance to compliance testing, which the company describes as the final stage of the development phase.

The company is currently working through Steps 3 and 4 of the six-step process: agreeing on detailed design standards and on how specific tests will be executed. Compliance testing, where the aircraft must demonstrate in practice that it meets each agreed standard, lies ahead.

SkyDrive’s CTO Arnaud Coville said in March that only a limited number of companies worldwide have reached this stage in the type certification process.

That said, some U.S.-based competitors are further along in their respective FAA certification processes. Joby Aviation completed Stage 4 of the FAA’s five-stage type certification process in late March 2026, with a commercial launch targeted for late 2026. Archer Aviation, meanwhile, is still actively pursuing type certification for its Midnight aircraft. Archer is targeting first passenger-carrying flights in 2026, as the company said in their FY 2025 quarterly results.

SkyDrive’s commercial target remains a service launch from 2028 onward. The company says the ADO framework will allow it to move with greater speed in design iterations and compliance testing on the path toward Type Certification.

Coville also indicated that SkyDrive plans to first complete type certification with JCAB before pursuing a pathway to FAA certification, a step that would be necessary to enter the U.S. market.

Vertical Aerospace closes $850 million financing package ahead of 2028 certification

Vertical Aerospace has confirmed the closing of its comprehensive $850 million financing package, which provides what the UK-based electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (eVTOL) developer describes as enough capital to fund its Valo aircraft through to certification and eventual commercialization.

The deal, first introduced on March 30 as an $800 million agreement in principle alongside a completed $50 million equity capital raise, has now been executed following the signing of definitive agreements on April 19 with its financing partners, Mudrick Capital Management and Yorkville Advisors Global.

The announcement comes days after Vertical’s first full-scale piloted two-way transition flight on April 16, which CEO Stuart Simpson described as a major de-risk moment for Vertical. In late March, the company warned of limited runway, a concern the financing now directly addresses.

The comprehensive financing package comprises three components. The first is a maturity extension of existing convertible secured notes held by Mudrick Capital, that means the firm has pushed back the deadline, from December 2028 to December 2030, on money it is already owed; a timeline Vertical says is deliberately set after its planned 2028 certification date and first commercial deliveries, while also purchasing up to $50 million more.

The second component is a Series A Convertible Preferred Equity facility of up to $250 million from Yorkville Advisors, which, in simple terms, is a type of investment that can later convert into company shares. The third is an equity line of credit of up to $500 million over 36 months, also by Yorkville Advisors. Vertical said it retains the flexibility to access other capital sources outside the package should it choose to do so.

With the closing of the package, Vertical will have approximately $160 million of working capital in the near term, and has initially drawn down an aggregate of $30 million under the facilities.

Mark Angelo, Founder and President of Yorkville Advisors, said in a statement that his firm was “pleased to support Vertical Aerospace as it advances toward certification and commercialisation,” adding that the company had “demonstrated strong execution against all valuation metrics.”

Beyond the transition flight, the package will fund public flight demonstrations, expansion of the Vertical Energy Center, and commencement of production of the first full-scale Valo certification aircraft. Vertical’s Valo is designed to carry passengers with zero operating emissions, covering up to 100 miles at speeds of up to 150 mph. The company holds approximately 1,500 pre-orders from customers including American Airlines, Japan Airlines, and Avolon.

The financing addresses concerns raised by Vertical’s Full Year 2025 results, in which the company ended the year with roughly $93 million in cash against projected 2026 spending of close to $200 million. The $850 million package directly closes that gap, giving the company a stated runway through its targeted 2028 certification date.

Norway is reinforcing its position as a global leader in sustainable aviation after announcing a new international testing project focused on zero- and low-emission aircraft. The initiative brings together Bristow Group, Electra, Avinor, and the Civil Aviation Authority Norway, consolidating a key ecosystem for the development of the future of air mobility.

The program aims to generate operational, regulatory, and market knowledge to accelerate the introduction of electric and hybrid-electric aircraft, especially in regions where geography limits ground connectivity. In this context, Electra’s innovative hybrid-electric aircraft stands out for its ultra-short takeoff and landing capability, operating from confined spaces.

As part of the project, Bristow Group and Electra will conduct demonstrations of the Ultra Short hybrid-electric aircraft, capable of taking off and landing in less than 50 meters. This capability allows operations from unconventional access points, such as parking lots or fields, which could radically transform regional connectivity by reducing travel times and expanding access to air transport.

This approach opens new possibilities for connecting remote communities, overcoming the limitations of terrain and traditional infrastructure. Furthermore, it will allow for the exploration of operations from innovative locations, integrating these services even at major airports without increasing congestion.

The project will be developed in phases, beginning with trials at airports in northern Norway and evolving toward more complex operations that will include connections to major hubs. Trial operations are expected to begin in mid-2027, following a preparation period of approximately six months.

Beyond technical demonstrations, the program is designed to evaluate key aspects such as emissions reduction, operational integration, and the scalability of these new transport models. It will also provide critical information for regulators to adapt regulatory frameworks to emerging technologies.

The signing of the agreement took place in Trondheim, marking another step in consolidating Norway’s position as a global laboratory for sustainable aviation. This approach not only drives technological innovation but also positions the country as a leader in the transition to cleaner, more efficient, and more accessible air transport systems.

Dubai opens world's first commercial vertiport near Dubai International Airport

The world’s first commercial vertiport, situated by Dubai International Airport is now ready to handle electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Skyports Infrastructure announced on April 16 the facility’s technical completion, which is intended to support future air taxi services.

The vertiport features dedicated landing pads, passenger terminals, and operational systems required to handle electric aircraft in a commercial environment, and is expected to support initial operations as early as 2026, in partnership with manufacturers such as Joby Aviation.

Joby Aviation, a US-based eVTOL company, holds exclusive rights to operate air taxi services in Dubai for six years, and aims to introduce commercial passenger services in the UAE. The vertiport includes the Joby Aviation-developed Global Electric Aviation Charging System (GEACS), the first such fast-charging equipment to be fitted at a commercial vertiport.

The company has been conducting a series of test flights and public demonstrations. In June 2025, the company completed a series of piloted test flights of its eVTOL air taxi in Margham, validating aircraft performance under local environmental conditions.

The programme also included the first UAE piloted flights between two locations, alongside daily flight demonstrations at the Dubai Airshow 2025. The company’s initial commercial operations are targeted to commence before the end of 2026.

Joby’s UAE General Manager, Anthony El-Khoury, said: “Together with the RTA, we’re proud to celebrate this important step and the progress it represents toward launching operations. We look forward to beginning commercial flights and to delivering fast, quiet, and sustainable air travel for Dubai’s residents and visitors.”

Designed for high-capacity operations, the vertiport is capable of handling up to 170,000 passengers annually and up to 42,000 aircraft movements, is also directly accessible to the Emirates Metro Station and includes an integrated multistorey car park. Alongside eVTOL operations, it is also designed to handle conventional helicopter traffic.

The facility is the first node in a broader network planned to connect key destinations across Dubai. Additional facilities are in development at Dubai Marina, Dubai Mall, and Palm Jumeirah. At Dubai Marina another node is currently under construction, with work at Dubai Mall and Palm Jumeirah set to begin in the coming months.

The CEO of Skyports Infrastructure, Duncan Walker, said: “With the world’s first commercial vertiport now being in a technical position to take eVTOL flights, we are seeing aviation history in the making. After years of planning and in depth design, this new class of infrastructure brings together the latest technologies and innovations that will change how people move around their cities.”

By advancing infrastructure projects ahead of full commercial deployment, these facilities may reduce lead times once aircraft receive certification. According to an analysis published last month by Aviation Business Middle East, Dubai’s vertiport completion positions the emirate as one of the few cities where ground infrastructure is already in place ahead of commercial aircraft approval.

Why airspace integration is central for eVTOL entry into service

As the electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) industry advances toward commercial operations, airspace management is emerging as a key factor in determining when eVTOL services can actually begin.

In aviation, regulatory approval is required not only for aircraft certification but also for how, where, and under what conditions those aircraft operate. As a result, progress in regulatory and airspace integration efforts plays an important role in shaping commercial timelines and the future of urban air mobility (UAM).

eVTOL aircraft are expected to operate in urban areas at altitudes ranging between 1,500 ft and 4,000 ft (approx. 450-1,200 meters) above ground level, a space currently occupied by helicopters and delivery drones. Introducing a higher density of eVTOL operations in this environment raises concerns about traffic separation, route planning, and congestion, aspects that existing frameworks were not designed to handle.

Frameworks are in development

To address these challenges, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) UAM Concept of Operations outlines a framework built around designated UAM corridors, coordinated data exchange between operators and air traffic control, and real-time separation services. Supporting these corridors, the FAA also envisions dedicated Providers of Services for Urban Air Mobility to handle operations planning, flight requests, and real-time information exchange.

A Notice of Proposed Rulemaking published in 2025 further proposed performance-based regulations for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations and third-party UAS Traffic Management (UTM) services, the infrastructure layer that would support large-scale autonomous flight.

Similar efforts are underway at the European Union Aviation Safety Agency and Brazil’s Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil, often based on performance-oriented regulatory approaches. A concrete milestone came in early 2026, when the U.S. Department of Transportation and FAA, as part of the eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP), identified eight advanced air mobility projects to conduct operational flights in active controlled airspace before those aircraft receive full type certification, targeting initial flights by summer 2026.

While these efforts share common objectives, differences remain in areas such as safety requirements, system assurance levels, and acceptable risk thresholds. These variations may introduce additional considerations for companies seeking to operate across multiple regulatory jurisdictions.

Industry is also moving to address these challenges directly. On April 7, 2026, Joby Aviation and Air Space Intelligence (ASI) announced a partnership aimed at integrating eVTOL operations into the U.S. National Airspace System. The collaboration pairs Joby’s aircraft with ASI’s Flyways AI platform, a system that already manages more than 40% of all U.S. air traffic.

Bernard Asare, ASI’s president of civil aviation, said: “Scaling advanced air mobility requires more than new aircraft — it requires a new operating system for the airspace.” Live operational exercises are expected before the end of 2026.

The different efforts from regulatory authorities and companies are expected to serve as a basis for the continued development of regulatory and airspace management frameworks. The ability to integrate new aircraft types into existing and emerging airspace structures will remain a central consideration for broader deployment.

The project, developed by the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in conjunction with Skyports Infrastructure, is located next to Dubai International Airport and is ready to begin operations in the near future.

This vertiport, considered the main hub of the city’s future air network, has a surface area of 3,100 m² distributed across four levels. It integrates a passenger terminal and flight operations under one roof, with two takeoff and landing areas specifically designed for eVTOL aircraft. It also incorporates advanced technology such as the fast-charging system developed by Joby Aviation, crucial for ensuring efficient and accessible operations.

The infrastructure is designed to handle up to 170,000 passengers and 42,000 aircraft movements annually, positioning it as a high-capacity model. It also stands out for its intermodal connectivity, with direct access to the metro and integrated parking, facilitating the transition between different modes of transport.

During the official presentation, Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum toured the facilities, where a complete simulation of the passenger experience was showcased. The system will include digital reservations, automated check-in, and optimized boarding processes to reduce waiting times and improve operational efficiency.

This vertiport will be the first of several planned hubs in Dubai, including future locations in strategic areas such as Dubai Marina, Dubai Mall, and Palm Jumeirah. These facilities will form an integrated network connecting the emirate’s main urban, tourist, and commercial centers.

Meanwhile, Joby Aviation continues to advance its flight testing and operational readiness. The company has already conducted successful trials under local conditions, including manned flights between different locations within the UAE, bringing the start of commercial operations closer.

This development solidifies Dubai’s position as a global leader in advanced air mobility, focusing on faster, quieter, and more sustainable transport solutions, aligned with global decarbonization trends in aviation.

Vertical Aerospace completed a historic flight by successfully performing a manned bidirectional transition, moving from vertical takeoff to wing-based flight and back again to vertical landing in a single continuous operation.

This milestone represents the validation of one of the most critical capabilities in eVTOL aviation, enabling runway-free operations and allowing point-to-point flights from vertiports or heliports.

The test was conducted under the regulatory supervision of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), setting a precedent in the certified development of electric aircraft.
