Siemens and CAPHENIA Sign Alliance to Accelerate Global Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Production

26 Feb 2026

Siemens and CAPHENIA have signed a strategic alliance to accelerate the industrial scale-up of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), aiming to drive the energy transition in the aviation sector.

As part of the agreement, Siemens becomes the preferred partner in automation and digitalization, providing technological solutions for CAPHENIA’s innovative plasma technology, capable of converting biomethane into synthesis gas, a raw material for producing SAF, renewable diesel, and chemicals.

Highly Energy-Efficient Plasma Technology

The core of the process is the Boudouard Plasma Reactor (PBR), a unique “3-in-1 zone” system that integrates three chemical reactions in a single reactor. The technology decomposes biomethane at approximately 1,500 °C, generating synthesis gas that can be transformed into synthetic fuels with no byproducts and minimal energy losses.

One of the system’s key differentiators is its efficiency of over 86%, achieved by reusing the heat released during gas cooling to preheat the incoming biomethane. This performance significantly surpasses conventional production methods.

Digitalization as a driver of scalability

Through its Siemens Xcelerator portfolio, the company will contribute process control systems, drive technology, instrumentation, simulation software, and digital twins. These tools will enable the optimization of operating parameters before physical commissioning and ensure standardized processes across multiple installations.

The support extends from CAPHENIA’s pilot plant in the Höchst Industrial Park in Frankfurt to future commercial expansion. The goal is to develop a modular and standardized automation and digitalization framework for the PBR, facilitating faster global implementation and reducing commissioning times.

A rapidly expanding market

Demand for SAF is growing, driven by regulations such as the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED), which establishes mandatory blending quotas. It is estimated that by 2050 the global aviation industry will need around 500 million tons of SAF per year, while currently it represents less than 1% of global kerosene consumption.

In this context, the alliance between Siemens and CAPHENIA aims to position itself as a technological catalyst to close the gap between supply and demand, accelerating the industrial production of sustainable synthetic fuels.

Heathrow Airport to Expand SAF Incentive Program in 2026 to Reach 5.6% Usage

16 Feb 2026

Heathrow Airport has announced the expansion of its Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) incentive program in 2026, aiming to reach a 5.6% SAF mix, exceeding the government mandate of 3.6% by two percentage points.

This measure has the potential to reduce carbon emissions by up to 600,000 tons, solidifying the airport’s position as a leading driver of decarbonization in the aviation sector.

The incentive scheme seeks to encourage airlines to adopt SAF, nearly halving the price gap between conventional fossil-based kerosene and the sustainable fuel. This financial strategy has been key to accelerating the transition in a context where the cost differential remains one of the biggest obstacles to SAF expansion.

For the fifth consecutive year, Heathrow is reinforcing its carbon reduction program with the ambition of having Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) represent 11% of the total fuel supplied at the airport by 2030.

According to Matthew Gorman, Heathrow’s Director of Sustainability, the airport used approximately 17% of the global SAF supply in 2024, positioning itself as a global leader in adoption. He emphasized that SAF is a key driver for achieving climate neutrality in aviation by 2050 and a central pillar of the airport’s Net Zero Emissions Plan.

The expansion of the program reflects a growing trend in Europe towards economic incentive mechanisms that accelerate the production and consumption of sustainable fuels, in line with the sector’s climate objectives.

Europe Will Need Large Volumes of Renewable Electricity to Fulfill Its e-SAF Plans, Warns IATA

16 Feb 2026

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has highlighted the enormous energy challenge posed by the development of e-SAF in Europe, emphasizing that the availability and cost of renewable electricity will be key factors in the strategy’s success.

e-SAF, a synthetic fuel produced from green hydrogen and captured CO₂ using renewable electricity, requires between 20 and 40 MWh per ton produced. According to currently announced plans, European countries will need between 0.7 and 10 TWh of electricity to support the planned projects.

Europe plans to build more than 1.5 million tons (Mt) of e-SAF capacity by 2030, which would represent approximately 80% of the projected global capacity for that year.

However, the challenge expands significantly by 2050. For airlines to achieve the global goal of net-zero emissions, it is estimated that around 205 million tons of e-SAF will be needed.

The optimal location for producing this fuel will depend on regions where renewable electricity can be generated in abundance and at competitive prices. In this context, Europe faces the risk that renewable capacity will not grow at the necessary rate or that energy costs will hinder the economic viability of projects.

The development of e-SAF represents not only a technological and industrial challenge, but primarily an energy and strategic challenge for aviation’s transition to decarbonization.
