Archer Announces UK Engineering Hub Opening and Strengthens Team with Key eVTOL Leadership

17 Dec 2025

Archer Aviation has announced plans to establish a new engineering hub in southwest England, strengthening its UK presence and involvement in advanced aerospace and defense programs. The initiative will be developed through its new subsidiary, Archer Aviation UK Limited, and aims to create and expand a local engineering team to support both civil and defense projects.

The announcement follows a recent meeting between Anduril UK, Archer, and GKN Aerospace, which confirmed a collaboration agreement to support Anduril’s work with the British Army and the Ministry of Defence. The cooperation will initially focus on the British Army’s Project NYX and the Ministry of Defence’s Collaborative Autonomous Ground Platform program, while also assessing future opportunities at GKN Aerospace’s airframe production facility on the Isle of Wight. In this context, Archer will contribute its expertise in eVTOL aircraft and hybrid propulsion systems to address operational defense needs.

As part of this expansion, Archer confirmed the addition of Dr. Limhi Somerville in early 2026. Somerville is a leading British expert in eVTOL engineering and joins the company after six years at Vertical Aerospace, where he recently led its engineering program. His background also includes previous experience at Jaguar Land Rover and the University of Warwick, combining academic research with advanced industrial development.

The company emphasized that the UK has a strong talent base and industrial infrastructure to play a key role in the next generation of the aerospace and defense industry. The opening of the new engineering center aims to capitalize on this ecosystem, invest in highly skilled local talent, and contribute to economic growth aligned with the country’s strategic priorities.

This expansion reinforces Archer’s strategy of developing dual-use vertical lift platforms and hybrid propulsion technologies, integrating civil and defense capabilities, and positioning the UK as a key hub within its global roadmap.
